ANDREW DOYLEAndrew (aka "Doyley") started playing underwater hockey with the Tas Uni Dive Club. He is not sure of the exact year but "sometime in the mid-late 1970s". His first uwh memories are of playing in a privately owned pool in the Hobart suburb of Berriedale, which had a sloped bottom with "a very ordinary surface". He recalls being encouraged to attend an AGM for the Association and then found himself elected as TUHA's President, taking over from Ron Mawbey, the inaugural President. Andrew served as President for 5 years and later returned to the Committee to serve as Secretary ("or possibly other position"). He's not sure how many National Championships he participated in, but "a lot". He recalls attending his first Nationals at Garden Island in Sydney which saw “the game that would never end” - a Grand Final between Qld and WA men that was undecided at full time so it was resumed the following day. That game led to the penalty shoot-out rule being created. Andrew also represented Australia in Masters teams at three World Championships: Wellington, New Zealand in 1992, Paris?, France in 1994, and Durban, South Africa in 1996. Doyley retired from underwater hockey around 2011, although he's not sure of the exact year. |
