The  Committee is essential to the organisation and running of TUHA activities. Without the dedicated efforts of the volunteers who perform the duties of each of the Committee positions, the sport would not operate in our State.

The TUHA Committee members are elected by TUHA members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). A call for nominations for the Committee positions is made in the lead up to the AGM and any TUHA member may nominate a fellow TUHA member or herself/himself for one or more of the Committee positions. Such nominations are normally made via in writing to the TUHA Secretary or to the TUHA President. Nominations can also be made during the elections at the AGM itself.

Current TUHA Committee Members

Martin Waldhoff Born in West Germany I landed in Tassie in 1981. Where I grew up I went to Taroona High School, right on the edge of the River Derwent, and that's where it all started really. The water was just there, every day, and it got under my skin. That love of the river and water sports in general has never left me. Where it started I played my first game of Hockey at the Clarence Pool in 1987 with the TasUni Life Sciences team which later became the Grizzlies from Hell. In the 1990s I served in the Australian Defence Force as an infantry soldier and trained as a combat medic. It feels like another lifetime now, but those years quietly shaped a lot, how I handle pressure, how I back the people around me, and how I get back up when things don't go to plan. These days Back into Hockey since around 2005, I work with South Property in the greater Hobart real estate market, and together with my son Austin we run Tassie Tallow, a small local business we're genuinely proud of. "I don't have all the answers, but I'll always show up and give it a go." What drives me Community, really. Whether it's a first home buyer finding their perfect home, the Tassie Tallow team kicking some goals, catching up with the club after a game or a new player turning up to hockey for the first time, it's the people that make it worthwhile. Tasmania is a small place and that's exactly what I love about it.

Andrew Cawthorn

Andrew has been playing underwater hockey since 1987, and currently plays for the Old Puckers in B Grade. He rejoined the Committee in 2019, after having earlier been a Committee member.

SECRETARY
Shaun Quin

Shaun started playing underwater hockey in Queensland in 1988, and currently plays for the Hot Chilli Prawns in B Grade. He has been on the current Committee since 2015.

TREASURER
Wil Suessenbach

Wil is a latecomer to the wonderful sport of underwater hockey. He became hooked on the sport a couple of years ago when he began training with his daughter’s team, the irrepressible Grizzlies from Hell, where he still flails around to the amusement of all. He got duped into being the TUHA Treasurer as he was told “you don’t have to do very much”. He lives in regret but hopes his efforts will get him into heaven.

CHIEF REFEREE
Harry van der Woude

Harry has been playing underwater hockey since the age of 12  and comes from strong underwater hockey stocks. He has both played and refereed at Nationals and World Championships, and he currently captains and plays for Depth Charges in A Grade.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
Grace Wells

Grace started playing underwater hockey at age 12 and has represented Tasmania at several Nationals and Australia at the Junior World Championships. Locally, Grace is a player for Berserkers in A Grade. She was very excited to take on the role of Development Officer. 

EQUIPMENT OFFICER
Jason Whelan

Jason has played underwater hockey for about 25 years. He is on his third sentence for the Committee and claims he is not guilty. He began with one season in D Grade with the Cardiac Concerns and has played A Grade ever since; currently in the Turbo Taddies.

STATE TEAM CO-ORDINATOR
​Nathan Whelan

Nathan is a qualified, sport specific Level 2 Underwater Hockey Coach. He started playing the sport at the age of 12 in 1990. He has coached numerous Junior, Mens and Womens teams since 1996 at both national and international level. Nathan is also a Qualified Level 3 Referee. His aspiration is to get Tasmanian national teams back to a high level of participation and then a higher level of ability.

Craig Proctor ​

Craig has been playing underwater hockey since 1976, beginning with Melbourne University Underwater Club, and currently plays for Nemos in C Grade. He was TUHA President in 2010 - 2012 and again for a few months, as Acting President, in 2024 .

MEMBER PROTECTION OFFICER
Briody Hilder​

Briody has been playing underwater hockey since she could first hold a stick and has represented Tasmania at several Nationals. She is a current player and Vice Captain of A Grade team Turbo Taddies.
